The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
