The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
