Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
